Redesign

The Yellow Labs: a crowded website, made clear.

The Yellow Labs is our sister studio. It builds software for founders. Its website had grown crowded, so we took it through our full process and redesigned and rebuilt every main page. Both pictures are real screenshots: the homepage before the redesign, and the live one.

Before
The Yellow Labs homepage before the redesign: a yellow banner, a very large headline in capitals, “AI built your app. We make it production-ready.”, half of it in green italics, and an animated code window beside it.
After
The Yellow Labs homepage after the redesign: “Senior developers. Without the senior price.”, two buttons, and beside it a few calm cards: an example code audit report, its fixed price, five business days to the report, and nothing upfront.

The problem

The website had grown one section at a time. Its homepage had eleven sections, and nine of them were built the same way: a small label, a huge heading, a line of text, then cards. Every section heading was the same size, so nothing stood out, and a visitor couldn’t tell what mattered most.

What we set out to do

  1. Say what the studio is, first. Senior developers who build, fix and grow software for founders, with the main service clear but not the whole story.

  2. Make one thing matter at a time. A clear order on every page, so a visitor sees what matters most before anything else.

  3. Keep it fast. At least 95 on Google’s tests for phones, the same as every website we make.

The decisions

  1. Fewer sections, each with one job.

The homepage went from eleven sections to nine, and each one answers a different question.

  2. Two fonts in place of three.

One for reading and one for small labels, with heading sizes that step down in a clear order.

  3. Real details instead of decoration.

An animated code window made way for what a client actually gets: an example audit report, its price and how long it takes.

  4. Light and dark, both checked.

The website follows the visitor’s phone or computer, and every page was checked for contrast in both.

  5. Nothing old left behind.

We removed 31 unused files and 3.4 MB of old images, and cut the shared styles from 22 KB to about 8 KB. Then we compared 25 pages at phone and desktop size, light and dark, to make sure nothing changed by accident.

  6. Faster to show.

About 130 KB of old fonts no longer load on every page, and the visitor-analytics script waits until the page is ready.

What it shows

How we find what matters on a website that has grown crowded, and redesign it without losing what worked.

What it doesn’t

Not a client project: The Yellow Labs is our own studio. And no before-and-after speed: the old website wasn’t measured before it was replaced, so we don’t show a number for it.
